Dear Premier Ford; Leaders Crombie, Schreiner, and Stiles,

RE: We Need to Talk About Watershed Security

We write to express our support for broad discussion on replacing Ontario’s current
approach to watershed management with an Outcomes-based Framework for Watershed
Security, defined as healthy and resilient watersheds that ensure regional ecological
integrity, social wellbeing, and economic vitality, as proposed by the Ontario Headwaters
Institute.

We share many of the concerns outlined by the Ontario Headwaters Institute and believe
that Ontario would benefit from extensive, meaningful dialogue on establishing both
clear science-based and mandated policy outcomes toward the goal of healthy and
resilient watersheds across the Province.
In particular, we support the recommendations in the Discussion Paper that there are real
and pressing issues that strongly suggest that Ontario should:

-Address policy and implementation gaps at the provincial level;
-Integrate land use and watershed planning at the municipal level; and,
-Revitalize and expand the role of conservation authorities and similar agencies.

We urge you to recognize and support the need for broad discussion on the future of our
watersheds, their biodiversity, and the nature-base solutions to the climate crisis that are
best addressed on a watershed basis.
