Promoting Watershed Security in Ontario – Water for People and for Nature

Why be a Watershed Guardian?

Watersheds are logical, naturally-defined regions that can be used to identity, protect and manage the ecological goods and services upon which we rely, frame land use planning, and monitor changes to our environment.

Originally impacted almost completely by natural processes and human activities such as the conversion of natural lands to other uses or dams & diversions, our watersheds are also currently being subjected to climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and invasive species.

In addition, increased population and development pressures are now exponentially greater than at any time in Ontario’s history, often pushing into upland headwater areas that are critical to watershed health.

These systematic threats don’t need just tinkering around the edges but a new vision to protect Ontario’s watershed security supported by broad civic engagement. One way you can help is to become an OHI Watershed Guardian, simply by subscribing to our e-mail newsletters.

By becoming a Watershed Guardian, you support and will be kept up-to-date on the OHI’s vision of watershed security – water for people and for nature – and our three policy goals:

  • The revitalization of Ontario’s approaches to watershed management;
  • Improved integration of land use and watershed planning; and,
  • A commitment to sustainable development

In addition, you automatically become a member of the Coalition of Ontario Watershed Guardians and can support petitions, e-mail campaigns, and other collaborative initiatives.

 Watershed Guardians will receive about 10 – 15 e-mails each year. Some of the e-mails will describe issues pertaining to core aspects of the OHI, such as research and education, while others will address campaigns being developed in or launched by the Coalition.
