Promoting Watershed Security in Ontario – Water for People and for Nature

In early April, Ontario posted notices to amend the Conservation Authority Act and its regulation. Prior to the deadline for comments, the Government tabled Bill 108, which impacts both notices. While many details remain vague, the Government did not offer public consultation nor extend the deadline for comments to the original postings. The OHI supported a reasoned, legal analysis led by CELA and EDC, seen here, and also offered a more direct set of comments and challenging recommendations, viewable at OHI Supplementary Observations on Conservation Authorities May 21. The OHI is concerned that, rather than seek a way to shift the province toward Integrated Watershed Management, the Government is seeking to dilute our framework system for watershed management in favour of an ill-defined piecemeal approach with executive authority resting in a few cabinet members.
