Land Use Impacts in the Great Lakes

Following input from the Great Lakes Ecoregion Network, and in particular its Physical Integrity team, as well as from others, the OHI is pleased to release our Draft Recommendations to Protect Physical Integrity and Watershed Secuity in the Great Lakes March 2025

We thank Freshwater Future for a grant that helped move this project forward.

Those who commented to date are being invited to remain involved.

The OHI will continue to work with the Physical Integrity team of the Network to refine and develop our recommendations, and to identify and implement strategies and tactics to increase efforts to protect watershed security in and the physical integrity of the Great Lakes region, its economy, and the well-being of our communities.

The OHI receives a much-appreciated grant from Freshwater Future to launch an effort on Land Use Impacts in the Great Lakes. Project goals include:

• Creating a summary of land use impacts on the health of the basin and its waters, including both planning and stewardship practices;

• Crafting a draft vision statement to address land use impacts for the possible attention of the Parties to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement; and,

• Working with the Great Lakes Ecoregion Network for their input on and for the Network to publicize and host a webinar on the draft vision statement.
