Promoting Watershed Security in Ontario:

ecological integrity, social wellbeing, and economic vitality

July 22, 2024: The OHI is pleased to release drawings of South-central Ontario’s Major Upland Headwater Areas. In addition to a Key Upland Drawing, individual drawings  depict elevation within and the direction of surface water flows from the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine, the Algonquin Dome, and The land Between.

While headwater streams can be found almost anywhere, these concentrations of upland headwater areas play important roles for thousands of streams, rivers, and lakes across South-central Ontario. Indeed, protecting them is integral to Ontario’s watershed security, biodiversity, climate resilience and, of course, water for people.

The drawings were prepared in our most recent project with faculty and students at the Geomatics Institute at Fleming College, whom we thank. We also note with shock and disapproval that the Province recently shuttered the institute.
